How to Keep Track of Christmas Gifts

By mid-December most of us are asking the same questions: Who have I actually finished shopping for? What did I spend? And where did I put that thing I bought in October? Here's a system that answers all three - permanently.

Why Christmas gift tracking falls apart

Most people track Christmas gifts in their head, in a notes app, or across a trail of order confirmation emails. That works until about the second week of December, when the volume gets real: a dozen people, gifts in three different stages, some ordered, some hidden in a closet, some still just an idea. The mental model collapses and you end up re-checking orders, re-counting gifts, and occasionally double-buying.

A good tracking system needs to answer four questions at a glance:

The spreadsheet approach (and its limits)

A Christmas gift spreadsheet - columns for person, gift, price, purchased, wrapped - is a genuine upgrade from memory. If you love spreadsheets, it works. But in practice most people hit the same friction points: it lives on a computer while shopping happens on a phone; there's no reminder attached to it; photos and store links don't fit in cells; and every January you either archive it and start over, or it becomes a mess.

A better system: track gifts by person and status

The system that actually holds up is the one retail buyers use: a pipeline. Every gift is attached to a person and moves through statuses - idea → decided → purchased → wrapped → given. At any moment, the answer to "am I done with Mom?" is simply whether her gifts have all reached the end of the pipeline.

How to do it in Gifted

  1. Create your Christmas event and add everyone you're buying for. Gifted shows all your people in one view, each with their own gift list and budget.
  2. Add gifts as they occur to you - with a photo, price, store link, and notes (sizes, colors, where you hid it). An idea you save in July is waiting for you in December.
  3. Update the status as you go. When you order, mark it purchased. When it's wrapped, mark it wrapped. The event screen shows exactly how many gifts are done - like "5/7 purchased" - so you always know what's left.
  4. Watch the budget update itself. Every price you enter rolls up into per-person and event totals with a progress bar and dollars remaining.
Tip: Make your Christmas event recurring. Next year's event is created automatically, and you can look back at what you gave everyone last year - no more repeat gifts two Christmases in a row.

What to record for every gift

Whichever tool you use, capture these five things when you buy: the recipient, the price you actually paid, where you bought it, the current status, and - seriously - where you hid it. Start earlier than feels necessary
