Why birthday reminders fail
Most of us technically have birthday reminders - phone contacts, calendar apps, social media. Yet the last-minute gift scramble persists, because those reminders have two fatal flaws:
- They fire too late. A notification on the day leaves time for a text message, not a gift. Shipping alone needs a week.
- They carry no plan. The reminder says "Sarah's birthday" - it doesn't say what to get her, what you spent last year, or what she mentioned wanting in April. So even an early reminder starts a research project, and research projects get postponed.
The fix is to treat a birthday not as a date but as a small project with a lead time: idea → purchase → wrap → give. The reminder should kick off the project, and the plan should already be attached.
